Red lipstick-colored lips imprinted on a page have long been used to symbolize a kiss, usually given in absentia on a letter or note. The same is true in tattoo as well, in an almost direct translation. As is often the case with tattoo, though, placement on the body can greatly influence the meaning attached to the kiss. In some cases, tattoos of lips are done like real lips instead of a lipstick stamp, to appear as a kind of second mouth. In other instances, a placement of lips on the buttocks is a visual way of saying "kiss my ass."
