The menorah is a candelabra with seven or nine branches that is associated with the Jewish faith, and thus it symbolizes Judaism. It is most closely associated with the Festival of Lights, also known as Chanukah, celebrating the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem in 165 B.C.E. According to tradition, the festival occurs near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas, and lasts for eight days. On each day an additional CANDLE is lit one on the first evening, two on the second, and so on. |
