More than just a weapon, the simple linear and sometimes upright form of the spear makes it an axial symbol, a center around which other forms revolve, and also a phallic symbol. Famous spears include the one used to pierce the side of Christ as he was crucified or that carried by Achilles, which could heal what it had wounded. They were used as symbols of strength, awarded for bravery, and at times also denoted kingship.
